Larger notches are for large-format tiles and uneven substrates. Tiles of 60×60 cm and above are fixed by back-buttering — combing both the substrate and the back of the tile — which raises consumption.

Why the real quantity differs from the arithmetic

Three things push actual consumption above the calculation: an uneven substrate (every millimetre out of true adds material), back-buttering required for large formats and wet areas, and wastage at cuts and corners. The figure stays an estimate — buy one spare bag from the same batch, because a different batch can mean a different shade in any mortar left visible.
